So what’s the deal with carbon offsetting?
Carbon offsetting is another contentious topic within the climate world. We believe investing in renewable energy is the best option for individuals because you can earn money while balancing your impact.
The two sides of the carbon offset debate can be summarized as follows:
🟢 At it’s best, carbon offsetting is a convenient way to balance the environmental impact that we’re making (as companies and individuals). After all, everyone unavoidably emits carbon as we live our lives.
🔴 At it’s worst, carbon offsetting is another form of corporate greenwashing. Some studies have shown that many “certified” carbon credits don’t actually do what they say they do.
We believe attempting to offset emissions via different technologies is better than nothing but should always be viewed with a dose of skepticism. Particularly when you hear about it in a marketing context.
Most importantly, offsets should also be viewed as the final action you should take once you've reduced your carbon impact as much as possible by adjusting your lifestyle and spending habits with Carbon tracking.
There are two ways to offset on Decarbon:
- Investing in renewable energy via Energea
- Buying carbon credits
Investing in renewable energy via Energea
We’ve partnered with the renewable energy investment platform, Energea, to be able to offset your emissions and earn passive income in the form of monthly dividends from the clean energy your investments generate.
This turns offsetting from a cost into a benefit!
We love Energea because they empower anyone to be able to invest in renewable energy. In addition to sending you monthly dividends, they share updates on the solar farms they’ve developed around the world with your investment.
Here’s how this looks in the app…
Simply input the amount that you’ve invested with Energea, and the app will estimate these offsets and plug them into your net footprint — the difference between your all-time total emissions and your total offsets.
Here’s what Energea’s dashboard looks like…
Although the carbon emissions reductions from your investments that Energea displays is just an estimate, we believe that that’s sufficient for individuals. As we know, certified carbon credits have their own imperfections.
Buying carbon credits
You can purchase and keep track of carbon credits from the Credits tab in the app.
Your list of carbon credits can be found by tapping on the green Total offset
bar. From there, you can see the certificates for your credits by tapping the green "Credited" button on each credit order. Here’s an example.
Buying credits
Credits are available for various projects curated by Decarbon. The price varies depending on the particulars of each project. Credit values are negative, while your purchases values are positive.
Payments are executed securely through Stripe, with Apple and Google Pay methods available. Decarbon doesn't store user payment method information in its databases.
There are two ways to get credits: single purchases and subscriptions.
Single purchases
You can buy credits one at a time by first choosing a project.
Each project profile contains useful details like:
- Price
- Tons of credits left
- Description of technology and developer
- Select highlights about the project
- Relevant United Nations Sustainable Development Goals
Subscriptions
Carbon credits subscriptions are available in two types:
- Dynamic. The amount of credits you get each month changes based on your emissions from the month prior. This lets you maintain your credits on autopilot.
- Fixed. The amount of credits you get each month doesn’t change.
Your carbon credits will be added to your Credits tab each month and emailed to you.
Subscriptions are managed entirely through Stripe, so you can:
- Cancel or pause anytime
- Switch payment methods
- See payment history
You can access your subscription management on the Credits tab.
To switch subscriptions, first cancel your current subscription and then the Credits tab will provide you with a walkthrough to select your new subscription.
Credits refund policy
If you're unhappy with your credits purchase for any reason, email hi@decarbonapp.com within 7 days of purchasing and we'll give you a full refund.
