The quick pitch
The longer pitch...
Climate change is a massive problem
We're on track to raise global temperatures 2.7°C above pre-industrial levels by 2100. Practically our entire way of modern life is powered by burning fossil fuels that emit heat-trapping greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide (CO2). Earth is already 1.1°C warmer than it was in the late 1800s.
The consequences of just these few degrees warming are devastating, particularly for people in poorer countries: intense droughts, severe fires, rising sea levels, catastrophic storms and declining biodiversity.
The 2015 UN Paris Climate Accords targeted limiting global warming to 1.5°C to avoid the worst effects. This requires us to halve our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030... and we aren't anywhere close to achieving this.
We need an organized solution
Every year more and more of us support policy changes and personal action on climate. We're switching to plant-based diets, biking more, living zero waste, going solar, and so much more. But we need a framework for understanding how our individual changes like this can add up to effective change. We need a standardized and efficient way to track greenhouse gas emissions at every level.
We want to speak the same language on climate because we know it will help us band together and achieve greater change. We have access to powerful technology that can enable these insights and we want to take ownership of the environmental impact that we're responsible for.
Introducing Decarbon
Decarbon's mission is to bring humanity into harmony with nature via consumer empowerment.
Harmony = eliminating our harmful impact on the planet
Empowerment = creating resources that enable effective action
For now, Decarbon is a simple app that empowers you to adopt sustainable habits via carbon budgeting. It's a free, straightforward way to track, reduce, and offset your carbon impact.
Decarbon is an evolution on typical carbon footprint calculators because:
- Decarbon estimates your impact based on your daily purchases, making it significantly more convenient and enabling you to see how your impact changes over time.
- Decarbon maintains an open-source database of carbon estimates, making it significantly more trustworthy and enabling you to receive more sophisticated estimates over time.
Decarbon isn’t a silver bullet, but it's a resource to get organized and know how you fit into the bigger picture of this global challenge.
Meet the founders
Kyle Graycar started Decarbon in 2020 out of his own desire to understand his impact on climate change and what he could actually do about it. He firmly believes that awareness and education are essential to unlocking progress on the climate crisis.
Kyle grew up in San Francisco and fell in love with nature on family hiking trips to Lake Tahoe. After graduating from UCLA with a degree in Environmental Science, Kyle's worked as a product marketer for mission-driven clean tech and ed tech startups.
Zack Karrasch joined Kyle as Co-founder of Decarbon in November 2022. Previously, he was a design consultant for Decarbon. Growing up in San Francisco, Zack has a deep love for the ocean and surfing, which has led to his interest in working with companies that are taking steps to fight climate change. Zack has 8 years of experience as a product designer working with early-stage startups.
