Joining forces for climate action
One of the most motivating and powerful things you can do to promote climate action is to join or create a team on Decarbon. Collective action is key to unlocking real climate solutions!
Anyone can create and join teams. Each team member can then create Climate Actions for their teammates to interact with.
Each team features two numbers on the top that shows
- how many climate actions were taken all-time with the team, and
- how many were taken this month.
Additionally, if the Team Lead activates Commute Tracking for their team, two additional numbers are displayed that show commute emissions for the current and previous month.
A leaderboard is also featured on the right-hand side that shows the total points earned by each team member for completing associated climate actions. These points can be used to structure a competition or game between team members for an incentive.
Below the fold, you can view the climate actions that were created by the team. If you join the team, these actions are also available from your Climate Action screen.
Team leads can also pin climate actions to feature them on their team page.
Last, teams also feature an activity feed that shows when members join, leave, create climate actions, or complete climate actions.
The Decarbon Team
When you first sign up for Decarbon you’re automatically joined into the Decarbon Team 👋. We maintain and provide our own set of climate actions for you to engage with.
You can also create your own climate actions to share with Decarbon’s entire user base.
Team Leads
If you create your own team (nice!) you become the Team Lead for it.
Team Leads have the special authority to
- modify or delete any climate actions
- set climate action point value
- pin climate actions
- set an incentive for completing climate actions
- modify team info

How to succeed with your Green Team
Here are the best practices we’ve found to be most important for running a successful green team.
Set clear goals
From the outset of creating your team, make goals clear and not too broad so the team can have enough leg-room to ease into this process of having a net zero carbon footprint. Your goals can be as simple as the total number of members in your team or total number of climate actions completed by a certain date.
Streamline communication
Take advantage of existing communication networks and be proactive in communicating climate goals accomplished throughout the week. For example, if your team is already active on Slack, use that!
Be transparent — share both pros and cons of using Decarbon and assist each other in both navigating the app as well as lessening your carbon footprint.
Incentivize action
Offer up carbon credits or other prizes for team members who excel in lessening their carbon footprint or taking climate action. For example, the incentive for a given month could be whoever is at the top of your team’s leaderboard could receive a full offset in emissions supporting whatever project they choose.
Highlight the leaderboard at team meetings to encourage competition. Of course, be sure to remind everyone that at the end of the day this isn’t a competition — we’re forming a community with a joint mission to save the planet 💚.
